Early fall is generally the strongest establishment window for cool-season tall fescue in Southern Illinois because soil remains warm while air temperatures begin cooling. Seedlings have time to develop before summer heat arrives. Spring seeding can work, but young grass faces stronger weed competition and heat stress sooner.

Successful seeding also depends on soil contact, seed quality, moisture, fertility, mowing practices, and whether pre-emergent herbicides were applied. Some crabgrass preventers can interfere with new grass establishment, so product labels and timing matter.
