Decorative rock can last longer and resists blowing away, but it costs more initially, absorbs heat, collects debris, and can become difficult to modify as plants mature. Weed barrier may slow weeds, but windblown soil and organic debris eventually allow seeds to grow above it.

Use mulch where plant health and easy bed changes are priorities. Consider rock where durability, drainage, or a specific architectural appearance matters most. Which look and maintenance level do you prefer?
