Settling usually begins below the pavers. Common causes include insufficient excavation, poorly compacted native soil, the wrong base material, base installed in lifts that were too thick, washed-out material, failed edge restraint, poor drainage, or utility trenches that were never compacted correctly.

Repairing only the low pavers may improve appearance temporarily, but the underlying cause should be identified first. Look for downspouts, concentrated runoff, loose edges, burrowing animals, leaking utilities, or a soft area beneath the base.
